In spite of the continued success of Botox around the globe, one doctor claims that this popular wrinkle treatment is really just a fraud.
The Hindustan Times recently reported on several negative statements about Botox made by Dr. Vijay Sharma, President of the Indian Association of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Sharma claims that even though Botox is 'the biggest fad in cosmetic procedures', it is actually a scam that helps line the pockets of many doctors, dermatologists and medical spa directors. Sharma believes that the glamorous business of cosmetic surgery is largely fueled by Botox injections, regardless of the potentially damaging side effects and limited outcomes of the procedure.
Doctors are making mega-profits from the treatment because patients must return to get touch-ups or re-treatments in order to maintain results. Most patients return to the same doctor that administered their first injectable, which means doctors can charge any fees they desire for touch-ups without worrying too much about the competition. In India, demand for these treatments is fueled by the glitz and glamor of Bollywood, India's version of the celebrity lifestyle. Women especially want to achieve movie-star looks, regardless of the consequences of surgery or cosmetic treatments; lip augmentation, breast implants and wrinkle removal treatments are some of the top trends in the Far East.
Regardless of Dr. Sharma's perspective on the fillers, statistics show that the beauty business is booming thanks to injectable fillers such as Botox, Juvederm, Restylane and other minimally-invasive procedures that offer instant results. In today's tough economic climate - especially in the United States - these procedures have become even more of a priority since they are significantly less expensive than facelifts and other types of facial rejuvenation procedures, and involve little or no downtime.
As long as the quest for perfect beauty continues to be a top priority, it seems that even potentially-harmful treatments will have a place in the doctor's office.
