Q&A: Why should I not drink carbonated beverages after Roux-en Y Bypass?

Ask A Doctor Question:

Why should I not drink carbonated beverages after Roux-en Y Bypass?

Answer:

Keith Norton Marshall, DO - LocateADoc.com

Carbonated beverages will distend and stretch out the pouch and opening. This can lead to weight regain. Not to mention the caffeine, which is not that healthy. Most of these contain too much sugar also. Best thing is sugar free non-carbonated fluids. Unsweetened tea, green tea-diet. Vitamin water, water.

Carbonated beverages, if you drink them slowly so that it doesn’t hurt, are generally fine after bariatric surgery.  If you are not chugging them so that it hurts, they will not stretch your pouch, which is the rumor.

On the other hand, a lot of carbonated drinks have sugar, which is extremely counterproductive to weight loss.  The ones that don’t have sugar usually have aspartame, which may also cause weight gain.
