Q&A: What can I do about lines on my face and below my eyes?

Ask A Doctor Question:

Dear Doctor, I will soon be 50 years old. In the last year I have noticed lines on my face high on my cheekbones and below the eyes. It used to be they would be evident early in the morning and go away, but now they are permanent. What can I do about them? They make me look tired all the time. I'm not good with procedures that have to be done over and over again. Is there a simple surgery to fix it? Thank you for your time. Colleen

Hi Colleen,
Thank you for your question. Lines that become increasingly present in the under eye area are caused by the following factors:
1) loss of elasticity of the skin and resulting skin laxity
2) loss of volume underneath the skin
3) repeated muscle contraction under the skin in the area
Therefore, the best remedy is a balanced treatment of all causes (just like anything else in medicine).
1) skin excess may removed by eyelift or tightened with laser or other minimally invasive treatment
2) the volume can be replaced with fat, synthetic fillers (such as Juvederm, Radiesse, Voluma etc)
3) the muscles can be controlled with neurotoxin (such as Botox, Dysport, etc)
Thanks again and please let me know if I may be of further help.
