Q&A: What can be done to remove two holes from lip piercings I got when I was young and dumb?

Ask A Doctor Question:

Hi, I am a 19 yr old girl that was young and dumb at the age of 17 and had gotten 2 lip piercings, I kept them in for only a few months at different times and now they are nothing but two uneven holes under my lip and are such an embarrassment! So my question is, what can I have done to remove these holes? And would they permately be gone? How much would it cost and how is the healing process afterwards? Thank you in advance!

Hi Ashley,

Although we do not provide the service, you may want to consider punch excision to remove the holes.  Find a great dermatologic surgeon or plastic surgeon that specializes in this.  You will still have a small scar after the holes are closed, but when done well, it should be preferable.

The removal of any piercing holes, including the lips, is a simple office procedure that is done under local anesthesia. Using a punch biopsy device just slightly bigger than hole are used to remove the indentations. While the holes/indentations will be permanently gone, there will be a very small scar in its place. The healing process is minimal and there is not real recovery. One can return to all physical activities right after the procedure.
