Q&A: What are the pros and cons of breast reduction surgery for my 20 year old daughter?

Ask A Doctor Question:

My 20 yr old daughter wants to have a breast reduction. She can't find clothes and swim suit tops that fit her right. She is a size 7/8 junior in clothes, but a size 34 G in bras. She keeps bringing up the subject but is afraid of surgery. What are the pros and cons of this surgery.

The surgery is usually one of the most gratifying procedures that women undergo! And with the newer procedures that reduce scars, the outcomes are improved as well. Please visit our website for further information or call our office at 866-646-6136 to discuss the matter further and schedule a consultation. I hope this helps and have a wonderful day!

Women with large, heavy breasts have many problems, among them social embarrassment, pain in the neck, back, and shoulders, recurrent yeast infection under the breasts, and decrease in ability to participate in sports and exercise.  Losing weight will not help, because the breasts do not lose weight along with body weight loss.  The only solution to this problem is reduction mammoplasty.  The operation is done in a hospital operating under general anesthesia and takes about two hours.  This is an open operation, not done with endoscopes, and there will be scars, but this is a small price to pay for relief from all the previously mentioned problems.  The only downside is the possibility of losing the ability to nurse.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
