Q&A: Should I be worries about a double toe nail?

Ask A Doctor Question:

Having an occasional toe nail coming in under the old one seemed normal for me. About 5 yrs ago my right big toe got infected and had to be pulled off. Then the nail grew back did an exchange of nails one top of each other and then is fine now. But the double nail thing started again on my left toe I thought no big deal its happened before. But a couple of weeks ago i went to clip them and noticed that my big toe nail is still short it has not grown. The under nail or the top nail. It doesn't hurt or anything it's just odd. Should i be worried?

The old nail was probably damaged by some sort of trauma. It could have been a slight injury to a long toenail...runners often experience this situation. The new nail takes up to a year to grow out and push off the old nail.
I hope this helps.
