Q&A: Is it better to have IVF or a tubal ligation reversal?

Ask A Doctor Question:

I'm 33 yrs old and I got my tubes tied almost 3 yrs ago. I want to have another baby. So my question is would it be better to have it reversed or do ivf.

Jeffrey M. Goldberg, MD -

Tubal ligation reversal is usually performed through a small incision as an outpatient. You have an excellent chance for success assuming that we have a good length of normal tube to repair and your partner has a normal semen analysis. You would also be a good candidate for in vitro fertilization (IVF) if you prefer. There are advantages and disadvantages to each but in general, tubal reversal is the more cost effective option to achieve a pregnancy.
