Q&A: I'm stressing about a bump on side of neck. Any suggestions on what it could be?

Ask A Doctor Question:

The other night I randomly was just feeling around my neck and felt a little bump underneath the skin on the right side of my neck in the middle. It kind of feels like it is part of a vein. On the left side, I can kind of feels even more little ones but I'm not sure if it's all in my head. It doesn't hurt, but I've been messing with it lately a lot so it's kind of sore sometimes now. I was sick with bronchitis from last November up until last month (January) after I finally went to the doctor and had to take antibiotics twice and one steroid to get rid of the cough, yellow phlegm, and wheezing. I kind of still have phlegm but it's mainly all clear/white now. My doctor moved so I have to wait a month to get into a new doctors office so I am just stressing about the bump. Any suggestions on what it could be?

It sounds like you might have some lymph nodes from your recent infection. These are common, and since they sound like they are relatively small, should go away as your infection gets better. If they persist for more than a month after you are better, or get bigger, then you should have them checked by a Primary Care Physician. Hope that helps.
