Q&A: Can I have a hysterectomy and abdominoplasty at the same time?

Ask A Doctor Question:

I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy -- is it possible to do an abdominoplasty at the same time?  I had a C-Section delivery 16 years ago and my stomach never tightened back up no matter how much exercise I put into it.  With age, it has only gotten worse.

I perform abdominoplasties(Tummy Tucks) with Hysterectomies frequently. I think it is the perfect opportunity to have an abdominoplasty since the patient will already be admitted to the hospital for 1-2 days. The exposure for the GYN is excellent as well, and the patients to great. I think you should definitely have them done at the same time.

Dear Sandee:
Technically and resourcefully, combining a tummy tuck with a hysterectomy is a terrific plan. You must consider there are limitations and potential complications to combined procedures.
The incision for a hysterectomy may not be the same used for the tummy tuck. Does the plastic surgeon go first for liposuction and incision; to come back for removal and closure of the excess skin, tightening the tummy and belly button formation? Does the gynecologist perform the hysterectomy laparoscopically or open?  You see, both your gynecologist and plastic surgeon must be conversing and planning for your best interest. Concerns regarding prolonged surgery, intra-operative bleeding, other findings and injury to adjacent structures could curtail the procedure. How does this relate to your expectations, expenses, social life and recovery.
Like I said, it is a great plan and successfully performed many times a week throughout the country but your needs are unique and must be discussed with both your physicians.
All the best!

Yes, the two procedures are done together often.  Please make sure you pick a plastic surgeon and OB/GYN that work together often. Good luck.
