Common Questions & Answers about Dermabrasion

"I have about a dozen scars on my shins due to chemical burns (from Nair Hair removal cream) and electrical burns due to bad electrolysis. All of the scars are small (about pea sized) and shallow rather than raised, and are very discolored--brownish purple while I am very fair skinned. I've tried silicone sheets to reduce the scarring, but it hasn't worked at all. I REALLY want to get rid of the discoloration, and would love to get rid of the shallowness, also, but it's the discoloration that bothers me more. What type of surgery (dermabrasion?) could help with with these scars, and what's a rough estimate of the cost? I hope you can help me. I can't go another summer in pants every day, but I can't bear to wear shorts with all of these ugly scars. Thanks for any help you can give me. Carla"

What to Expect with Your First Dermabrasion Procedure

Dermabrasion is an advanced skin resurfacing procedure designed to remove the superficial layer of skin and promote healthy regeneration of the skin cells. In addition to buffing away dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, this aggressive procedure helps promote collagen production so that skin appears smoother and more toned. If you are reviewing different anti aging procedures, consider the following facts about dermabrasion:

How Dermabrasion Works

Dermabrasion works like an aggressive ‘skin sanding’ treatment, buffing away superficial lines, scars and wrinkles, and getting rid of dead skin cells. It is much more aggressive than the microdermabrasion which uses fine crystals to gently buff away the skin. Dermabrasion is often recommended for people with deep wrinkles, acne scars and age spots that are not responding to microdermabrasion or chemical peels. In most cases, only one dermabrasion procedure is needed to even out the skin and create a smooth and toned texture.

The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis, and does not require any type of skin preparation or pre-treatment. The average cost of the dermabrasion treatment in the United States is about $1,800 to $4,000+, but this can vary significantly by location of the doctor. The procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes, and you can return home the same day.

Common Effects of Dermabrasion

Some of the effects you can expect with dermabrasion include:
  • Reduction of acne scars
  • Buffing away of wrinkles and fine lines
  • More even skin tone
  • Firmer, smoother skin
  • Revealing of pinkish skin that will fade in about six to eight weeks
Most dermabrasion procedures are performed under local anesthesia, and you can undergo a single treatment about once per year. Because this procedure is so aggressive, the skin must be relatively free of existing scars, wounds and active acne. You will need to undergo a skin consultation before the treatment to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Some of the risks associated with dermabrasion include excessive scarring, bleeding, enlarged skin pores and a change in skin pigmentation. In some cases, another corrective treatment may be required to achieve desired results.

Healing After Dermabrasion

The healing process after dermabrasion may take up to two weeks, and most people experience tenderness, numbness and soreness for about a week after the treatment. IN order to promote the healing process, you will need to:

  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Take supplements such as zinc and Vitamin C that promote healing
  • Stay out of direct sunlight
  • Wear SPF 15 or above even on cloudy days
  • Avoid makeup for 24 to 48 hours after the treatment
  • Avoid use of skin products that contain glycolic acid, salicylic acid and other ingredients that promote exfoliation
  • Scarring and redness
It’s also important to wait about six weeks until the skin has healed completely before undergoing chemical peels or any type of medical grade facial.
