Pros and Cons of Ear Pinning Surgery

Children who have protruding ears are often the best candidates for the plastic surgery procedure known as an ‘ear tuck’, or ear pinning surgery (otoplasty). The procedure involves repositioning or reconstructing the ear to achieve a more attractive appearance. Ear pinning is commonly performed to reduce the size of big ears, reshape asymmetrical ears, or add skin tissue to create a more balanced look. It is typically performed by a plastic or oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and both children and adults can undergo surgery for aesthetic reasons.

How Ear Pinning Surgery (Otoplasty) Is Performed

Ear pinning surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the extent of the surgery. It is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and involves cutting into one side of the flat cartilage of the ear and then sculpting and repositioning the skin tissues. The cartilage and tissues are then sutured in place, and may involve both permanent, internal sutures and dissolvable sutures to hold the newly formed ear in place. The wounds are dressed with bandages and held in place for a few days after surgery to promote healing.

A procedure known as ear reduction otoplasty is another option for individuals who want to reduce the size of their ears overall. This procedure involves the actual removal of the tissue and cartilage, and in some cases, a complete reconstruction of portions of the year. It is a more extensive surgery than ear pinning, and may involve additional recovery time.

Benefits of Ear Pinning Surgery

Most people pursue ear pinning surgery for aesthetic purposes; the primary benefit of reducing the size of or improving the shape of the ears is to create a more balanced facial appearance. However, there are some very rare cases where a tumor or skin problem may be the reason to pursue otoplasty. Most importantly, ear pinning can provide a boost in self-esteem and increase confidence.

Otoplasty is a relatively simple procedure, and involves only several weeks of recovery time. The procedure can be performed on both children and adults, and involves only a few incisions. Some surgeons are even able to perform a ‘scarless otoplasty’ using advanced techniques.

Drawbacks of Ear Pinning Surgery

While ear pinning surgery seems like the ultimate ‘quick fix’ solution for adults or children with protruding ears, there are some drawbacks to consider. First, results of the surgery may not be what is expected; some patients end up disliking their ears even after surgery, and there are limited options for an ear pinning reversal.

This type of surgery also involves several risks and complications. Cartilage infection, excessive scarring, pain and soreness, and swelling of the skin tissues around the treatment area are fairly common; although these effects can subside over time, some people experience extensive scarring and even numbness around the ears and face.

If you’ve been considering ear pinning surgery, set up a consultation with a plastic surgeon in your area to learn about costs, benefits, and if you are a good candidate for the otoplasty procedure.
