Common Questions & Answers about Dermabrasion

"I have about a dozen scars on my shins due to chemical burns (from Nair Hair removal cream) and electrical burns due to bad electrolysis. All of the scars are small (about pea sized) and shallow rather than raised, and are very discolored--brownish purple while I am very fair skinned. I've tried silicone sheets to reduce the scarring, but it hasn't worked at all. I REALLY want to get rid of the discoloration, and would love to get rid of the shallowness, also, but it's the discoloration that bothers me more. What type of surgery (dermabrasion?) could help with with these scars, and what's a rough estimate of the cost? I hope you can help me. I can't go another summer in pants every day, but I can't bear to wear shorts with all of these ugly scars. Thanks for any help you can give me. Carla"

Pros and Cons of Dermaplaning for Skin Rejuvenation

If you have frequent breakouts or excess facial hair, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion techniques may not be effective for creating a smooth, youthful look. Dermaplaning offers one alternative for people who are not getting results with microdermabrasion, and is designed to remove the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin using a small surgical blade. This is a non-invasive procedure that gently removes the top layer of skin to leave it looking smooth, vibrant and hair-free. Here’s a close look at the benefits and drawbacks of the dermaplaning procedure:

About Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks and typically removes several weeks of dead skin cell buildup. The dermaplaning procedure must be performed by a licensed dermatologist or plastic surgeon, and is relatively safe on most skin types.

The treatment is performed quickly and does not cause any pain. Dermaplaning is designed primarily to remove vellous hair, the type of hair that is commonly referred to as ‘peach fuzz’, a very fine hair that the body develops to stay warm. The appearance of vellous hair is more pronounced in some people than in others, and dermaplaning can help to remove this type of hair temporarily.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is often considered to be a ‘manual exfoliation’ technique because it effectively gets rid of the outer layer of skin to leave the skin much smoother. This procedure does not cause any trauma to the skin, and can be performed several times throughout the year for better results. Some of the key benefits of dermaplaning include:

  • Helps exfoliate skin with broken capillaries
  • Offers better results than traditional microdermabrasion
  • Little downtime
  • Skin is only slightly red and puffy after the treatment
  • Can temporarily remove fine, downy hair with ease
  • Performed just like shaving
  • Can be performed with a chemical peel

Drawbacks of Dermaplaning

While dermaplaning offers several benefits, there are also some drawbacks to this procedure. People with very sensitive skin may not be good candidates for this procedure because it is among the more aggressive skin exfoliation and rejuvenation treatments available. The skin may peel naturally after the procedure, especially if you are undergoing the treatment every two to three weeks. This means you will need to use an emollient-rich moisturizer day and night as the peeling process begins, and ensure that the skin does not get too dry.

Dermaplaning is not designed for people with acne or those who experience frequent breakouts because it can trigger overactivity of the sebaceous glands. When someone has acne, they need their vellous hairs to expunge the oil that typically builds up under the skin. If the vellous hairs are removed because of the dermaplaning procedure, the individual may experience more breakouts and even more severe acne.
