Overview of Cryolypolysis for Fat Removal

Some of today’s innovative fat and cellulite reduction procedures involve the application of heat energy to break down fatty tissues and increase circulation to the area. However, some doctors believe that fat cells will be more responsive to cold instead of heat, and have developed a promising new technology called cryolypolysis. Cryolypolysis has not been approved for body contouring, fat reduction or body shaping but is showing promise in research circles and may soon become an option for fat removal.
How Cryolypolysis Works
The cryolypolysis procedure works by freezing the fat beneath the skin. This process crystallizes the lipoids in the fat cells so that they begin to dissolve, and since it is a targeted treatment, the surrounding tissues are left intact. There is no bursting of the fat cells or any trauma to the skin tissues. Instead, the fat cells break down very slowly and can be eliminated from the body naturally.
Dermatologist Jeffrey S. Dover, MD, FAAD associate of clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and adjunct professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire presented the latest technologies in fat removal at the American Academy of Dermatology’s SKIN Academy in Massachusetts in 2009. Dr. Dover was the lead investigator in the cryolypolysis study, and explained that ultrasound measurements taken on 10 of the 32 subjects that participated in the study showed an average reduction of 22.4 percent of body fat four months after the procedure.
The procedure may be equally as effective for treating localized fat around the belly, saddle bags, thighs and love handles. Dr. Dover believes that this type of procedure may also be effective at getting rid of body fat around the neck, arms and knees. (Source: MedicalNewsToday)
Potential Benefits of Cryolypolysis
One of the most significant benefits of cryolypolysis is that it is a completely non-invasive procedure. Since it can be targeted, there may be fewer risks involved when compared to other surgical procedures for fat removal. Results are not immediate, but are significant. Side effects are limited to numbness and redness of the treated area for a few hours after the treatment, and some changes in skin sensation in the treated area for about two to three weeks.
Other Information About Cryolypolysis
Clinical research for cryolypolysis is still underway, and a number of investigative studies will need to be completed before this procedure becomes available. While the findings so far look promising, researchers are still unsure where the dissolved fat will be dissolved completely and eliminated from the body, or if it will overtax the liver. In addition, side effects may vary from person to person and there are still a lot of questions about the efficacy of freezing fat cells. As of 2009, the FDA has approved cryolypolysis for chilling the skin and not for body shaping, fat reduction or body contouring.
