Overview of Common Chiropractic Techniques

Chiropractic therapy can help to resolve a number of health problems and reduce chronic pain in the joints and muscles. Your chiropractic doctor may use a variety of techniques to correct spinal misalignments because these are often the root cause of excessive pain, postural problems and imbalances associated with the central nervous system.

There are approximately 55 different adjustments and techniques used by chiropractors, and these consist of either manipulation techniques that involve the movement of the joint beyond the standard range of motion, or mobilization techniques that help to increase range of motion after injury. Here’s an overview of some of the most common chiropractic techniques:

Activator Technique: This chiropractic technique is one of the most commonly used techniques in chiropractic therapy and works by delivering a measured force onto the spine using a small tool. The pressure and light force used in this technique helps to painlessly move the vertebrae and correct spinal dysfunction.

Palmer Toggle Recoil Technique: This technique involves placing the hands over the subluxation of the spine and creating a movement in the spinal column by applying intense pressure on the elbows. There is no cracking of the joints involved with this technique, and it is often combined with other techniques to adjust the spine.

Applied Kinesiology: This chiropractic technique is designed to balance opposing muscles attached to a misaligned bone. The treatment involves a light massage of various acupressure points, followed by the application of more pressure on certain bones and joints. The result is better muscle functioning and improved range of motion.

Cox-Flexion Distraction: This technique involves the steady stretching of the spine to correct lower back pain, increase range of motion and improve the posture. It is one of the most commonly-used techniques in chiropractic therapy because it offers immediate results.

Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique (BEST): The bio-energetic synchronization technique does not involve using any force, but pressure is applied in certain areas of the body to reduce blocked nerve energy and restore healthy central nervous system functioning. This technique is especially effective for people with disorders or diseases related to a nervous system imbalance such as excessive anxiety, panic attacks or depression.

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT): This technique involves the placement of padded blocks directly under the pelvis so that the tension created by this position helps to adjust the spine and neck areas naturally. The technique may be accompanied by a light shoulder or neck massage to increase circulation and restore healthy nerve functioning throughout the body.

Logan Basic Technique: This technique involves applying gentle pressure at the base of the spine. Gentle, sustained pressure in this area can help to correct the rest of the spine in some cases, making this a valuable technique for spinal adjustments.

Every chiropractor uses a different set of techniques to treat a variety of conditions, and will perform a spinal assessment in order to find out what the root cause of the problem may be. If you think you may be a good candidate for chiropractic treatments, set up a consultation with a chiropractor in your area.
