Mini Tummy Tucks vs. Full Abdominoplasty

A lean, sculpted midsection isn’t easy to achieve with a healthy diet or intensive workout regimen. Men and women who have stubborn body fat along the torso often turn to the mini tummy tuck or full abdominoplasty to lose the excess weight around the midsection and reshape their body for a more attractive look.

Both types of body contouring and reshaping procedures offer several benefits, but the best solution for you will depend on how much body fat you have to lose, and what type of scarring you’re willing to accept in order achieve results.

How Mini Tummy Tucks Work

Individuals who are within approximately 10% of their ideal weight are often the best candidates of the mini tummy tuck. This procedure involves very little fat removal, and is designed to reshape the lower abdomen by removing excess skin tissues. The procedure is most appropriate for men and women who have experienced weight loss but still have a small ‘pooch’ left behind.
Mini tummy tuck surgery involves making a very small incision a few inches below the belly button. The surgeons can then remove excess fat with a mini-lipo procedure, and restructure the skin and abdominal muscles if necessary. The skin is then pulled down and sutured in place to create a smoother, flatter and leaner look.

Most mini tummy tucks are performed within a few hours on an outpatient basis, and patients may wear compression garments for a few weeks to speed up the healing process. Overall, this procedure is most suitable for those who do not want to worry about excessive scarring after surgery, and only have a small amount of fat or loose skin to manage.

Considerations for a Full Abdominoplasty

A full abdominoplasty is designed for individuals who are 20% or more above their ideal weight. These procedures are typically performed with liposuction and body contouring to reshape the lower abdomen and midsection and reposition the skin tissues. The surgeon cuts into the skin below the belly button to remove excess body fat. They can then lift the skin back to reposition the belly button and recreate the abdominal wall.

Recreating the abdominal wall is an especially attractive option for women who have had children, because their abdominal muscles typically tear apart during pregnancy. The full abdominoplasty involves suturing the muscles together to create a ‘six pack’, and the removal of excess fat on top of the muscles helps the individual achieve a sculpted and toned appearance.

The procedure can help create a very lean and sculpted look, but typically involves making a long incision between the hip bone and belly button.

Undergoing tummy tuck surgery is an important decision, and there are several options available for getting the look you want. Women who plan to become pregnant after tummy tuck surgery may need additional surgery after recovering from pregnancy if they want to maintain the results.
