Liposuction or Vaser liposculpture is used to remove excess fat in this delicate area, and a small incision can be made immediately after the fat removal process to begin the sculpting process. This incision typically lies right under the chin where it can heal easily; the surgeon can then manipulate the tissues and muscles around the base of the neck, and sculpt the skin and tissues smooth. The muscles can be tightened using sutures.
 
One of the most significant techniques used in neck recontouring, and something that is not found in any other type of facelift surgery procedure, is the use of a corset-stitch inserted from the bottom of one ear, around the neck, and up to the bottom of the other ear. This technique helps to tighten the skin and muscles even further, creating a very sculpted, defined look. The skin can then be stitched back over the modified tissues and muscles, and bandages are applied to start the healing and recovery process.
 
The entire procedure typically does not take more than two hours, and may be combined with a full facelift. Healing and recovery can take up to two weeks or more, and the patient is advised to avoid twisting or flexing the neck during this time.
