Many
anti-aging specialists and skincare professionals recommend laser treatments for those who are suffering from broken blood vessels, sun damaged skin or for skin that has excessive lines and wrinkles. Laser treatments may be an affordable and effective alternative to
facelift surgery, and can be used to treat a variety of conditions beyond wrinkles and fine lines.
The Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation system (ESR) is one of the latest laser treatments on the market, a non-ablative, non-invasive procedure that that helps to improve the overall texture and tone of the skin. Here’s what you need to know if you are considering laser skin rejuvenation as part of your anti-aging treatment plan:
How Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation (ESR) Works
Enhanced skin rejuvenation is one of the most gentle laser treatments of all lasers, and works by breaking down pigmentation under the skin’s surface, correcting skin irregularities, and boosting collagen production so that the skin appears firmer, stronger and more resilient.
After the laser procedure is administered, the skin will appear slightly pink and swollen. During the days and weeks after the treatment, the deeper layers of the skin will begin to heal and the result will be plumper, firmer and more toned-looking skin. The laser can be used to diminish broken blood vessels, correct skin pigmentation irregularities, and even reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.
What Can the ESR Procedure Treat?
The Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation system can treat a number of skin conditions, and it can be performed on most skin types. In addition to the corrective benefits listed above, the ESR procedure can be performed to:
- Reduce wrinkles and lines around the sensitive eye area
- Treat sun damaged skin
- Reduce the appearance of age spots
- Eliminate or reduce pigmentation around the mouth and cheeks
- Reduce the signs of aging on the face, chest, hands and neck
What to Expect with Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation Treatments
ESR procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in a medical spa or cosmetic surgery setting, and must be performed by a licensed professional. Most sessions last no longer than an hour, and you are permitted to return to regular activities after your treatment.
In some cases, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the face and neck to numb the skin and reduce the slight pinching effects of the laser. The first half of the treatment is more targeted, so the laser energy is applied using a small laser ‘pen’. This part of the treatment targets blood vessels and capillaries, age spots, small patches of pigmentation and other skin irregularities.
The second part of the ESR treatment involves the application of a large hand piece. This is designed to diffuse pigmentation of the skin, and can also be used to treat redness caused by rosacea. This hand piece glides over the skin’s surface, correcting imperfections and heating up the skin tissues slightly to trigger collagen production.
You will be required to wear sunscreen immediately after the treatment, and avoid excessive sun exposure. Makeup can be applied immediately after the treatment, and any redness or swelling will subside within a few days.
