How Laser Breast Augmentation Works

If you’ve been considering breast implants to increase the size of your breasts and improve your silhouette, you may not have to endure the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. Laser enhanced breast augmentation is an innovative procedure that uses a laser to cut into the skin to reduce pain levels upon insertion of the implant, and when creating the pocket for the implant on the chest wall. It’s a unique technique for inserting silicone or saline implants, and is still undergoing testing. However, this procedure could be a valuable option for many women considering breast augmentation surgery.

Laser vs. Traditional Breast Augmentation

The traditional breast implant technique requires making deep incisions under the breasts and restructuring the nipple and areola based on the size of the implants. This means the surgeon must use tools to cut into the skin and manipulate the skin tissues. He or she is working with a very small area, and the entire procedure is a delicate and potentially traumatic one. Still, many plastic surgeons have perfected their technique so that they are able to produce natural-looking results.
 
The laser enhanced breast augmentation procedure still involves cutting the skin and manipulating the skin tissues, but an Erchonia laser beam is used to make the incision. This laser effectively creates the pocket needed to insert the implant, and causes far less pain and discomfort than the conventional procedure. The implants can be placed quickly into the pocket, and then inflated to the desired size within minutes. The nipple and surrounding skin can then be sewn back together.

Potential for Laser Breast Augmentation

Laser breast augmentation procedures have been undergoing testing and trials since 2005, and are still awaiting FDA approval. However, similar procedures are being performed for those who want to get a breast lift, or just reshape and sculpt their existing breasts. In these cases, laser light is absorbed by the water in the skin cells to tighten, tone and lift the skin. This is the same process of a laser facelift. The heat from the laser heats up the skin around the tissues, and increases collagen production which creates healthier, more youthful looking breasts.
 
Experts say the effects of laser breast enhancement are long-lasting, and the procedure leaves the skin looking softer, more toned and more youthful. There are no side effects associated with this procedure, and there is no downtime involved. Some people may experience slight swelling and redness from the heat of the laser, but this typically subsides within a few hours.
 
Many people who do not want to endure the pain and discomfort associated with conventional breast augmentation procedures may benefit from the options available with a laser procedure. However, it may still be a few years until the technique is approved in the United States. In the meantime, laser breast enhancement procedures can be used to tighten, tone and lift sagging breast tissues, and create a more youthful silhouette without surgery.
