Hair Transplantation Options for Women

The psychological and physical effects of hair loss can be devastating; women who lose their hair may be especially affected because baldness or thinning hair is most commonly characteristic of men. However, the Bernstein Medical Center for Hair Restoration in New York reports that almost 30% of women experience some degree of hair loss and thinning of the hair as part of the aging process. This means that women may be good candidates for hair transplants and hair restoration procedures.

Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss in women can be linked to hormonal changes that result from menopause, pregnancy and other life changes. It typically occurs in cycles, and most women notice a thinning of the hair directly above their heads and not necessarily along the hair line. While there are several ways to cover up the problem with certain hair styles and hair products, the loss is still relatively significant; hair loss in women can cause emotional distress.

Still, there are several options for hair restoration for women; women can benefit most from follicular unit grafting, a procedure that allows the hair to regrow naturally and the process involves very little risk. Women are not encouraged to use standard medications such as Propecia and supplements, because there have been very few studies done on women using these products and experiencing positive results.

How Follicular Hair Transplantation for Women Works

Follicular hair transplantation continues to be one of the top hair transplant procedures in men because it creates the most natural-looking results. The procedure can be just as effective for women and works by dissecting an area of the scalp that is showing signs of healthy growth and then transplanting it into the balding area. The transplants mimic natural hair growth and cause minimal damage to the skin. The surgeon can transplant hundreds, even thousands of these follicular transplants so that the hair begins to grow steadily within a few months.
Follicular Transplantation is one of the major advances in hair transplant procedures, allowing surgeons to carefully manipulate the skin on the scalp and produce very natural-looking results.

Best Candidates for Hair Transplantation

Some people may not be good candidates for the hair transplantation procedure, and only a hair transplant doctor can determine if the hair loss is significant enough to be treated with a hair transplants. In most cases, the best candidates for the procedure are women who:

  • Have high hairlines – women with high hairlines usually have a stable hair growth pattern and a strong supply of donor hair and tissues available for the treatment
  • Are experiencing diffuse hair loss – women with hair loss that is not only limited to the top of their scalp
  • Have thinning hair around the crown or mid-scalp region

Some surgeons also recommend certain medications to stabilize hormones and improve the chances of hair growth. Women who may be suffering from thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances and collagen disorders may be good candidates for supplements and medicinal therapies that bring the body in balance and help promote healthy hair growth.
