"I was wondering, how to get rid of my double chin? How long do they put you out for surgery? What are the risks? And how much does it cost? How long does it last. Can you exercise your chin and get the same results?"

You may already have heard about the benefits of facial yoga, or discovered a range of anti aging gadgets that promise to stretch, strengthen and tone your facial muscles in order to ward off wrinkles. These strategies are becoming increasingly popular as more people look for new ways to get rid of wrinkles without surgery, and many experts affirm that engaging in facial exercises on a regular basis can reduce the signs of premature aging.
Skeptics argue that facial exercises may actually do more harm than good; laugh lines, squinting and frowning often cause excessive facial lines that often require surgery or cosmetic enhancements such as Botox and Restylane. Still, many believe that the secret to lifelong beauty lies in strengthening and toning specific facial muscles regularly in order to improve the contours of the face, increase circulation and help the face radiate with the look of youth.
Carolyn Cleaves of Carolyns Facial Fitness explains that “There are fifty-seven muscles in the face and neck. Twenty-six are voluntary. It's important to get a program that addresses all of these muscles. Not just the face, but the neck as well.”
Ready to try the latest in facial fitness and ‘facial gymnastics’? Here are a few basic facial exercises to get started on your anti aging regimen:
The neck and lower jaw areas can be some of the most difficult areas to hide the signs of aging, and skin tightening treatments such as Thermage can help. Still, a simple facial exercise that can strengthen and tone the neck can be performed as follows:
1. Tilt the head back until you feel the neck stretching
2. Slide an open hand from your chin down to the collarbone, hold for 5 – 10 seconds
3. Repeat
Instead of pursuing an eyelid lift, this facial exercise attempts to strengthen and tighten the muscles directly above the nose and eyebrows. Strengthening this area can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and create a ‘wide-eyed’ look:
1. Close both eyes and rest the index fingers on each eyebrow
2. Stretch the upper eyelid up and down for ten seconds each by increasing tension to the brow area with your fingers
3. Repeat 5 – 10 times
The chin often shows signs of premature aging with increased wrinkles and a wider appearance. Facial exercises that tone and tighten the muscles around the jawline can help prevent the chin from looking wider and helps create more definition for the lower face:
1. Elevate the lower lip to contract the muscles in the lower chin area. This will create small wrinkles.
2. Keep the head still and lower the chin downward while keeping the head still.
3. Repeat 10 – 15 times for a total of 2-3 repetitions.
