"I have about a dozen scars on my shins due to chemical burns (from Nair Hair removal cream) and electrical burns due to bad electrolysis. All of the scars are small (about pea sized) and shallow rather than raised, and are very discolored--brownish purple while I am very fair skinned. I've tried silicone sheets to reduce the scarring, but it hasn't worked at all. I REALLY want to get rid of the discoloration, and would love to get rid of the shallowness, also, but it's the discoloration that bothers me more. What type of surgery (dermabrasion?) could help with with these scars, and what's a rough estimate of the cost? I hope you can help me. I can't go another summer in pants every day, but I can't bear to wear shorts with all of these ugly scars. Thanks for any help you can give me. Carla"

Getting rid of unwanted body hair can be a chore, but shaving and waxing aren’t your only options with today’s permanent hair removal options.
Hair removal procedures including electrolysis and laser hair removal procedures can help you get rid of facial and body hair for the long-term, allowing you to forego conventional hair removal methods for good. Electrolysis and laser hair removal treatments work by destroying the hair follicle so that hair growth slows down, but in most cases, the laser is not as targeted or precise as electrolysis.
How do you choose between these innovative laser hair removal treatments? Here are some things to consider when you’re reviewing your options:
Electrolysis is a convenient and effective way to get rid of unwanted facial and body hair, and is an FDA-approved hair removal technique. There are three types of currents that can be administered to the skin: galvanic electrolysi, thermolysis and a ‘blend’ of both.
Key benefits of electrolysis include:
It’s important to remember that electrolysis will only slow down the rate of hair growth, so you may still need to shave and wax the treatment area – only less frequently. Some drawbacks of electrolysis include:
One of the biggest benefits of laser hair removal treatments is the number of sessions required in order to see results. Most people will achieve noticeable results within 1-2 treatments, and this can keep costs of hair removal low overall. Other benefits of laser hair removal include:
Since laser hair removal treatments are not as targeted as electrolysis, they do present some drawbacks such as:
Laser hair removal is ideal for larger treatment areas such as the back, legs and arms, and is especially effective at removing patches of dark or coarse hair.
