"I have about a dozen scars on my shins due to chemical burns (from Nair Hair removal cream) and electrical burns due to bad electrolysis. All of the scars are small (about pea sized) and shallow rather than raised, and are very discolored--brownish purple while I am very fair skinned. I've tried silicone sheets to reduce the scarring, but it hasn't worked at all. I REALLY want to get rid of the discoloration, and would love to get rid of the shallowness, also, but it's the discoloration that bothers me more. What type of surgery (dermabrasion?) could help with with these scars, and what's a rough estimate of the cost? I hope you can help me. I can't go another summer in pants every day, but I can't bear to wear shorts with all of these ugly scars. Thanks for any help you can give me. Carla"

Dermaplaning for Acne Scars and Hair Removal

Many of today’s leading acne treatments involve aggressive lasers and chemical peel treatments that help to reduce acne problems from deep within the skin’s layers, and restore the skin after acne scarring. Acne scars can be difficult to treat with topical treatments and facials, but the skin can be restored with dermal fillers and other facial rejuvenation treatments such as dermaplaning.
Dermaplaning is an aggressive form of microdermabrasion that helps resurface the skin while increasing collagen production. In addition to smoothing out the skin and reducing the appearance of acne scars, dermaplaning can help eliminate unwanted hair around the face and leave the skin looking smoother and younger. If you’ve been suffering from acne scars or an uneven skin tone, you may be a good candidate for the dermaplaning procedure.
How Dermaplaning Works
Deep acne scars cannot be treated easily with topical treatments and even some lasers, which is why dermaplaning continues to be a popular option for those who are trying to recover their skin after acne. Dermplaning is typically performed under local anesthesia; the physician uses a razor-like device to resurface the top layer of skin by removing the outer layer of the skin and the top third of the dermis.
The device literally scrapes away the outer layer of the skin and then sands down to the top of the dermal layer where most scars or wrinkles are located. This helps remove almost all types of acne scars, pigmented spots on the top layer of the skin, and even unwanted hair around the jawline and above the mouth. The damage caused by the process also triggers collagen production which in turn leaves the skin looking smoother and tighter.
Potential Side Effects of Dermaplaning
Since dermaplaning is such an aggressive treatment, it may cause adverse side effects on some types of skin. Thickening of the skin is one of the most common effects of excessive abrasion; the skin overcompensates for the damage caused under the surface layer by overproducing skin cells during recovery, which then results in an unattractive layer of skin. However, a physician can apply cortisone cream or cortisone injections to soften the skin and make it appear more youthful.
Pigmentation changes are another concern associated with dermaplaning; since the procedure triggers the skin’s natural healing and recovery process, some areas of the face may not recover at the same pace as the rest of the face. This results in uneven pigmentation, but this can be treated with skin lightening facial treatments or a medical-grade bleaching cream.
Candidates interested in dermaplaning will need to obtain a consultation with a doctor to make sure their skin type is a good match for the procedure, and that medical or health problems will not interfere with the treatment. Dermaplaning is a relatively aggressive treatment that can leave the skin red, swollen and sore for several days after treatment. However, once the skin is able to grow back during the natural renewal process, most people experience dramatic results.
