Conventional breast augmentation procedures include saline and silicone implants, and fat injections that can enhance the breasts and make them appear fuller, larger or more even. Millions of women who undergo major life changes such as pregnancy or dramatic weight loss lose elasticity in the breast area; plastic surgery can help improve the appearance of the breasts and enhance the woman’s natural silhouette. In recent years, many women are turning to the ‘mommy makeover’, a set of procedures designed to correct any sagging tissue, eliminate excess fat and restore the body to a more youthful appearance.
Now, some plastic surgeons are saying that breast implants aren’t the only option for correcting drooping or sagging breasts; an innovative procedure presented at the Plastic Surgery 2008 conference reveals a unique technique that allows surgeons to reposition and augment the breasts using the patient’s own tissue.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is presenting an innovative breast reshaping procedure at the Plastic Surgery 2008 Conference in late October. The procedure does not make use of breast implants, and involves repositioning and suturing the breast tissues using a special technique so that they appear larger, fuller and look natural after surgery.
Dr. Dennis Hurwitz, ASPS Member explains that, "In the past several years I've seen more women in their 50s who are unhappy with their breasts. These women have had numerous pregnancies, waited later in life to have children, lost a lot of weight, or simply haven't aged well and want to restore their figure. The breast irregularities these patients share are unique. These are extreme cases – not your 'run of the mill' augmentation patients who simply want to enlarge their breasts from an A to C cup." The innovative procedure may soon become an attractive alternative to the breast lift and other breast augmentation procedures that many women pursue for their makeovers.
Key benefits of the no-implant breast lift procedure include:
While the ‘no implant’ technique offers several benefits for women who want to steer clear of silicone or saline implants, it does pose some drawbacks.
According to Dr. Hurwitz, the repositioning technique does not work for women who do not naturally have loose skin or excess tissue available; the best candidates for the procedure are those who have experienced massive weight loss or have become noticeably flat-chested after giving birth.
In addition to augmenting and repositioning the breasts with this innovative procedure, patients can explore several other body contouring and cosmetic enhancement procedures as part of their ‘mommy makeover.’ More women who are unhappy with their bodies after the changes from pregnancy are turning to facial rejuvenation treatments such as IPL lasers, skin tightening procedures such as Thermage, and liposuction for the upper arms. Together, this package of cosmetic procedures can help create the ultimate mommy makeover and allow women to restore their body to a pre-pregnancy shape.
