Chiropractic Treatment for TMJ

Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) affects approximately 35% of the American population, and while pain medication or lifestyle changes can help, chiropractic treatment may be a better option. Chiropractors can use a number of adjustment techniques to increase range of motion and mobility in the jaw and neck area, and reduce pain associated with TMJ. This process can help reduce the clicking and grinding that many TMJ sufferers experience when they open and close their mouths, and can also reduce discomfort in the rest of the body.

Causes of TMJ

There are several causes of TMJ. Many people have TMJ because of missing teeth that have forced bones in the jaw out of position. Others experience TMJ symptoms after a car crash or other accident that has knocked their jaw out of place. Still, the most common reason for TMJ is an unconscious grinding of the teeth or tightening the jaw at night. This constant pressure to the teeth and jaw can cause severe pain and puts excessive strain on the muscles. A chiropractor can help reduce the impact of all of these causes by increasing range of motion and reducing stress around the jaw area.

Chiropractic Therapy for TMJ

Chiropractors work with patients with TMJ to reduce discomfort and stress around the jaw area, eliminate headaches and earaches that are commonly associated with TMJ, and eliminate the excessive strain and pressure over the muscles around the jaw and neck area.
After taking x-rays and completing a medical exam, the chiropractor may also do a posture evaluation and palpitation test to gauge the level of mobility in the jaw area. In addition to performing manual adjustments to certain joints and muscles, the chiropractor may also recommend certain types of medication and supplements to help with the healing process, and in some severe cases, surgery.

If grinding teeth and clenching the jaw are the reasons behind your TMJ, the treatment plan may include stress-relieving treatments such as deep tissue massage and other therapies that help to reduce tension and improve blood circulation. Some chiropractors use a combination of ultrasound energy waves, electric stimulation, heat packs, ice packs and other instruments to help restore joint functioning and improve range of motion in this delicate area.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for TMJ Sufferers

TMJ sufferers who choose to visit a chiropractor can enjoy a number of benefits. These benefits include:

  • Reduced stress levels
  • Increased feelings of well-being
  • Results without surgery or prescription drugs
  • Immediate reduction in major symptoms
  • More restful sleep
  • Healthier appetite and higher energy level
  • Improved posture
  • Reduced risk of developing severe TMJ in later years
The treatment plan for TMJ sufferers will vary depending on the severity of the condition, medical history, and if the patient has had chiropractic treatments before.
If you are suffering from TMJ, schedule a consultation with a chiropractic doctor in your area. He or she will be able to complete a thorough assessment of your head and neck area and create a customized treatment plan to address your condition.
