Common Questions & Answers about Dermabrasion

"I have about a dozen scars on my shins due to chemical burns (from Nair Hair removal cream) and electrical burns due to bad electrolysis. All of the scars are small (about pea sized) and shallow rather than raised, and are very discolored--brownish purple while I am very fair skinned. I've tried silicone sheets to reduce the scarring, but it hasn't worked at all. I REALLY want to get rid of the discoloration, and would love to get rid of the shallowness, also, but it's the discoloration that bothers me more. What type of surgery (dermabrasion?) could help with with these scars, and what's a rough estimate of the cost? I hope you can help me. I can't go another summer in pants every day, but I can't bear to wear shorts with all of these ugly scars. Thanks for any help you can give me. Carla"

Benefits of Combination Dermabrasion and C02 Resurfacing

If you’re looking for an effective way to get rid of acne scars or correct an uneven skin tone, your cosmetic surgeon or medical spa may have recommended laser skin resurfacing or dermabrasion procedures that can help you achieve significant results after one session. However, some dermatologists suggest that the best way to get rid of acne scars and pigmented skin permanently is to use a combination of dermabrasion and C02 resurfacing techniques.

Gary D. Monheit, M.D., Associate Professor at the Department of Dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has been testing the benefits of combination procedures and modalities for helping patients with excessive scarring. He points out that one of the most effective ways to reduce the appearance of scars after acne and restore the skin to a healthier state involves using CO2 laser skin resurfacing with the dermabrasion procedure. The C02 laser removes the top layer of skin tissues to get rid of skin irregularities, while the dermabrasion technique can be used to get rid of individual scars that do not respond to the resurfacing procedure. Here are some of the key benefits of the combination dermabrasion and C02 resurfacing procedures when treating acne scars, pigmented skin and skin irregularities:

1. Performed under general anesthesia. Both the resurfacing and dermabrasion techniques are fairly aggressive treatments, they can be performed under general anesthesia. This makes it easier for the patient to tolerate the pain, and painkillers may be prescribed for treating the skin shortly after treatment.

2. Limited scarring from the procedure. Some resurfacing techniques and procedures can leave certain parts of the skin slightly scarred, and this can take several weeks to heal. The combination of dermabrasion and C02 resurfacing can be performed using a skin freezing process which effectively reduces the risk of scarring of the dermis and helps the skin heal itself naturally shortly after treatment.

3. Healing is typically completed within two weeks. Most patients will be covered with bandages and gauze immediately after the procedure, and the skin will begin to grow back within 10 to 14 days. The majority of patients that undergo the combination laser resurfacing and dermabrasion procedures will see a transformation in under two weeks.

While the dermabrasion and C02 resurfacing procedure offers a number of benefits, it is a fairly extensive procedure that should only be performed by a trained, skilled and experienced physician. The dermabrasion portion of the procedure is the most time-intensive part of the skin resurfacing process, and every patient will react differently to the treatment. It is typically performed after the resurfacing procedure, and in some cases, the dermabrasion wand will only be passed once or twice over the affected area, instead of over the entire face.

Overall, the combination dermabrasion and C02 resurfacing procedure can be much more effective for getting rid of acne scars and improving the texture of the skin than undergoing an individual laser skin resurfacing or dermabrasion procedure.
