Acoustic Wave Therapy for Cellulite - Does it Really Work?

Many of today’s innovative cellulite reduction treatments involve administering a combination of heat and light waves to the skin, or using an intensive massage technique to break down fat cells and smooth out dimples under the skin. Acoustic Wave Therapy is one of the latest treatment alternatives on the market, a procedure that promises to reduce cellulite and sun damage by manipulating the connective tissue deep under the skin’s surface using acoustic pulses that pass through the skin and fat to release the cells causing cellulite – the fat cells that are ‘trapped’ under the skin’s surface.

The procedure takes only 30 minutes, and promises noticeable results after just a few treatments. It is designed especially for those who follow a reasonably healthy diet and exercise regimen, but are not able to sculpt, tone or recontour their body.

Does Acoustic Wave Therapy really work?  Here’s a closer look at this innovative treatment for cellulite:

How Acoustic Wave Therapy Works

Acoustic Wave Therapy treatments are administered using a handheld device that mechanically pulls and sculpts the underlying tissues using a series of pulses. The head of the device emits high pressure waves to stimulate the skin and draw blood up near the surface. As the frequency is increased, the device helps manipulate and massage the connective tissues with intense pressure.

This procedure has already been used for several years to treat patients suffering from bad joints or poor circulation, because the vibration and rhythmic movements help to trigger the body’s pain and anti-inflammatory response so that new collagen is formed. More collagen and elastin under the skin make the top of the skin appear smoother and more resilient, and this itself can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Acoustic Wave Therapy can target areas of dimpled skin that benefit most from the vibrating and pulsating device, as the skin is pulled upward and the tissues are manipulated to release the conglomeration of stored fat cells. The body then eliminates these excess cells through its natural processes.

What Can Acoustic Wave Therapy Treat?

Acoustic Wave Therapy is deisgned to treat cellulite, and not break down fatty tissue like many other noninvasive fat reduction and cellulite reduction currently on the market. AWT procedures can target problem areas such as the:

  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Knees
  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Flanks (love handles)

Most treatments only last for 6-10 minutes per treatment area, and each area can be treated as often as twice per week. However, this treatment does not offer instant results; most people need between 8 – 12 treatments to see noticeable results, and must maintain a healthy diet and consistent exercise regiment so that the body can flush out toxins and cells naturally during the process.

Dr. Bill Johnson  conducted several clinical trials for Acoustic Wave Therapy , and discusses the effects of AWT and how cellulite responds to the treatment in this brief video:
