Artefill vs. Sculptra – Which One is Better for Wrinkle Removal?

While microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing are a few options for wrinkle removal, dermal fillers are still a leading treatment for younger looking skin.

Artefill and Sculptra are both approved for cosmetic use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and present several benefits for aging skin. A closer look at each of these injectable fillers may help you decide which will be the best choice for long-term wrinkle removal:

Artefill for Wrinkle Removal

Artefill (polymethacrylate and bovine collagen) is a mix of small plastic beads and bovine collagen extract. Since collagen is absorbed by the body after a period of time, Artefill works by leaving behind the small pieces of plastic for more permanent results. Results are immediate, and most people need just one treatment to achieve a dramatic effect that can last up to 5 years.

What It Can Do: Artefill can be used to plump up the lips, reduce eyebrow furrows, remove facial wrinkles and even improve the appearance of acne scars. Administration of Artefill typically takes 30-45 minutes per area.

Average Costs: Average costs of treatment in the United States are $500+ per syringe in 2008.

Common Side Effects: Some people may experience an allergic reaction to the formula if they are sensitive to bovine products, while others will exhibit an adverse reaction to the plastic ingredients. Bruising, tenderness and soreness are also common side effects, and the medical professional will conduct an allergy test to ensure you are the right candidate for Artefill treatments.

Sculptra for Wrinkle Removal

Sculptra (Poly-L-lactic acid) is a synthetic filler that was approved by the FDA in August 2004. It is used as a sculpting agent for the face after facial fat loss, and can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as a result. The formula has been deemed safe and biocompatible for the skin, and may help reduce skin folds and sunken areas after just one treatment.

What It Can Do:  Sculptra can be used to correct facial wrinkles, build up any sunken areas of the face and reduce skin indentations. It is designed to add volume to the face to create a fuller and more youthful appearance, and can be administered to those who are HIV positive and experiencing significant fat and muscle loss in the facial area.

Average Costs: Average costs of treatment in the United States are $2,500+ per treatment in 2008

Common Side Effects: Sculptra cannot be used on any area that is inflamed or where they may be an active skin infection. Common side effects include a delayed appearance of small bumps that can felt when the skin is pressed, as well as standard tenderness, swelling and soreness immediately after treatment.

From removing crow’s feet to smoothing out laugh lines, synthetic dermal fillers are a simple way to improve your appearance without the pain – and costs – of cosmetic or plastic surgery. While these injectable fillers do have some side effects, most people can enjoy the benefits of this speedy treatment and get immediate results.
