Slim Down for Spring with Mesotherapy

If a few extra pounds are standing in the way of sporting a bathing suit comfortably this season, you may be able to lose the weight within a few weeks with a mesotherapy treatment plan. Mesotherapy injections are designed to break down fatty deposits embedded under the skin without surgery. Mesotherapy has been used in France since the 50s, and has gained popularity in the United States in recent years as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

How Mesotherapy Works

Mesotherapy injections are made with a set of medications that shrink the fat cells in the skin’s fascia layer. When the fat is dissolved, the cells and toxins are excreted by the kidneys. Mesotherapy was originally developed for spot weight reduction, wrinkle elimination and cellulite reduction, but is commonly used to correct lumps and unevenness under the skin after weight gain or after liposuction surgery.

The mesotherapy injection is comprised of microscopic quantities of homeopathic medications including amino acids, vitamins, minerals and herbal substances. Medications such as aminophyilline are used to treat cellulite because they can break down fat. The needles used in mesotherapy are between 4 to 6 mm, and the doctor delivers the medication at a certain depth to reach the mesoderm (middle layer) of the skin.

Can Mesotherapy Help You Lose Weight?

After the series of micro injections, the patient typically experiences a slight burning sensation that lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. Some patients do swell up for up to five days after the treatment, and this can be the result of an intolerance to the medication, or just from inflammation from the injection’s compounds. Once the medications have reached the fat cells, they will begin to break kill off the active cells and break down the cell membranes. Over the course of a few days and weeks, the kidneys will expel all of the toxic materials out of the body, and the skin around the treated area will return to normal.

Some patients can expect to lose a few pounds and ounces of fatty tissue from this procedure, but results are not guaranteed. The typical patient can lose between 4 and 10 inches in about ten weeks, and the injections can be tailored for each patient to optimize results.

Things to Consider Before Having Mesotherapy

The effects of mesotherapy vary significantly from patient to patient, and the physician may choose varying concentrations of medication depending on whether the patient wants to target cellulite or wants to lose weight overall. Factors that will affect results include genetics, gender, age and the patient’s medical history.

While mesotherapy offers several benefits, there are some side effects and risks to keep in mind before undergoing treatment. There is a risk of infection at the injection site, minor soreness in the treated area, excessive swelling if you have a bad reaction from the treatment, and skin discoloration in certain areas.

Mesotherapy is currently available at many medical spas, weight loss centers and cosmetic surgery clinics around the country. After your consultation, you will be able to reserve a series of treatments where injections are administered over the course of a few weeks.
