Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
I was doing a week of volunteer surgery in Western Samoa. There was a 9 yr old girl, cute as could be, that had sustained an injury to one of her eyes and she had a white cataract. Aside from robbing her of her vision, it also looked strange to see this pure white big pupil. I did her cataract surgery and put in a lens implant. The gratitude and joy of the family is as fresh in my mind today as when it happened. It is indeed more blessed to give than to receive.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
Having grown up in Africa and the Orient, I have seen much poverty. I think what always breaks my heart the most, is to see little children, lacking in food, clothing, and most importantly, a future. I love to support small grassroots type of organizations, people who are right on the front lines, making a difference. I want to see my money go to the people in need, not to support some huge organization that does a lot of advertising about all that it does.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
I like building things so I might be an architect. But I also love growing things so maybe a landscape architect. So many options!!
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
Retire? Who said you have to retire? I plan to work as long as God gives me strength and a sound mind! My Dad retired from Medicine at the age of 86 after working 60 years as a physician. I always want to be useful and be doing something of significance. I would love to go back overseas, maybe do some teaching to empower people to provide for themselves. When you love what you do, it isn't work.
