What is your charity organization of choice and why?
My wife created and runs the Everychild Foundation, which raises over one million dollars each year to help local Los Angeles children who are hampered by neglect or disease. It is an amazing cause and a terrific organization.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
I am a very precise person. Laser vision correction requires great attention to detail. I also had the problem -- nearsightedness and astigmatism -- which was corrected by Lasik in 1996. I know what my patients are experiencing and what they are fearful of, and can relate very well to them.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
My father was a surgeon. He used to take me to the hospital with him on Sunday mornings. I was awed by the way in which he was able to help people. I loved science, and early on decided that this was how I wanted to spend my life -- helping people through medicine.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
The patient is very happy with his or her vision and there is minimal discomfort or down time.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
Lasik laser vision correction is possibly the greatest procedure in all of medicine. It affects people in such a profound way, and the results are so immediate, with virtually no pain.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
I really love what I do. I am not sure that I ever want to retire.
