Treatment for the man Your doctor might recommend that you try insemination first. The sperm are collected, cleaned and concentrated to increase the number of healthy sperm for insemination. When initial treatments don't work Many couples who have problems getting pregnant arrive at a common point: They must decide whether they want to try assisted reproductive technology (ART). In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common type of ART. In this treatment, a fertilized egg or eggs are placed in the woman's uterus through the cervix. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI (say "ICK-see"). In a lab, your doctor injects one sperm into one egg. If fertilization occurs, the doctor puts the embryo into the woman's uterus. â?? How to Help the Fertility Process Along 1. Stop Smoking Cigarettes or Marijuana. Smoking tobacco has been linked to low sperm counts and sluggish motility. Long-term use of marijuana can result in low sperm count and abnormally developed sperm. 2. Decrease your Drinking. Alcohol can reduce the production of normally formed sperm needed for a successful pregnancy. 3. Watch your Weight. Both overweight and underweight men can have fertility problems. With too much weight, there can be hormonal disturbances, and when a man's too lean, he can have decreased sperm count and functionality. 4. Exercise in Moderation. Excessive exercise could lower your sperm count indirectly by lowering the amount of testosterone in your body. And as you might have guessed, stay off the steroids -- they can cause testicular shrinkage, resulting in infertility. 5. Value your Vitamins. Low levels of vitamin C and zinc can cause sperm to clump together, so keep your numbers up. Vitamin E can counteract excess free-oxygen radicals, which can also affect sperm quality. 6. Free Yourself of Toxins. Landscapers, contractors, manufacturing workers, and men who have regular contact with environmental toxins or poisons (pesticides, insecticides, lead, radiation, or heavy metals) are all at risk of infertility. Infertility Options Before you and your partner start treatment, talk about how far you want to go with treatment. You may want to try medicine but don't want to have surgery. While you may change your mind during your treatment, it's good to have an idea where you want to draw the line.
