Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
I do not have one specific example of a most rewarding experience. My passion comes from treating each person as a unique individual and assisting them in solving the complex concerns that bring them to my practice. I do so in a manner that is uniquely tailored to each individual's needs.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
Doctors without Borders. I believe that it is fundamentally important for all human beings to have access to medical and psychological care.
What does living in the Saint Paul community mean to you?
I do not actually live in the Maplewood community, but I spend a great deal of time there. I am pleased with the ease of location Maplewood provides and have greatly enjoyed working with individuals from Maplewood as well as the greater Twin Cities and surrounding area.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
"It is a fine thing to build your castles in the sky as long as your foundations are solidly built on the ground." (unknown). I strive to help all my clients to build their "castles", but also work to assure that they are healthy in both mind and body ("foundations") in order to maximize their success.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
My specialty area of Health Psychology allows me to work with clients on the core buliding blocks of life - the biological, psychological and social factors that influence their worlds. I also enjoy the ability to meet with clients for 60 minutes (as opposed to 7 in many medical practices) as often as once per week.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
...a teacher or a coach.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
I realized that my passion was in healthcare when I volunteered at a nursing home in my home town of Commugny, Switzerland at age 13 and at a time where volunteer work was unheard of in that community. I later went on to obtain a business degree and felt unsatisfied being on Boards of Directors without direct client involvement. My decision to work as a firefighter for 7 years solidified my committment to providing emotional healing.
Can you tell us in your own words what you consider a perfect outcome of a surgical procedure?
The perfect outcome of psychological treatment is to see a client understand and cope with emotional distress and function at the highest level possible - both physically and emotionally.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
I am most enthusiastic practicing Health Psychology, which examines the intersection between biological and psychological worlds. I am most fulfilled when I can help clients understand their medical conditions, learn how to cope with them on an emotional level and assist them in regaining a maximum level of well-being and function. Conditions I see frequently include infertility, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, terminal cancer, traumatic injuries including to the brain and depression and anxiety (both generalized as well as depression and anxiety surrounding medical concerns and procedures.
What procedure would you like to do more of and why?
I do not use a "cookie-cutter" approach for any of my work. I derive the greatest success and satisfaction from acting as a consultant to clients who have a variety of complex concerns. I am driven and goal-oriented, but practice within the value system and needs of each client, choosing unique interventions from my "tool belt" to best assist each person in a unique manner.
In a perfect world, when would you like to retire, where would you go and what would you do?
The timing of retirement is uncertain as my passion comes from my work. In terms of location I would look for an ideal balance of natural beauty and intellectual stimulation.
