Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
It is very hard to say that one experience working with a patient is more important than the other. But on a big scale, I think that accurate and timely diagnosis is one of the most important aspects of medicine. The word "rewarding" does not apply in most cases when quick and correct diagnosis is required. When my correct and timely diagnosis just saved a life of a 10 year old child with diabetes, I was glad that we caught it on time. But then it is always challenging to bring the final word about health and life adjustments to a patient or a parent. Perhaps, I find it rewarding when I have direct influence on a patient's life extension and restoring a patient's quality of life. For example after timely diagnosis of a heart attack of a 42 year old male patient he followed the treatment plan to the dot, lost weight, became much more active and lived another 15 years full and beautiful life filled with personal achievements, his daughter's wedding and contributions to the community.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
I donate to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Many of my patients are women, and besides one of the staff members has become effected by breast cancer. It is very emotional subject for my staff, and we are just trying to support the best we can. A woman's body is very complex, and we are trying to do everything we can to help our patients to bring awareness and education hoping that one day we will see the end to this horrible disease effecting so many of our female patients. If our wives and sisters are so effected by breast cancer, we just wish that we see the day when at least our daughters generation is breast cancer free!
What does living in the Manalapan community mean to you?
Manalapan is a part of Monmouth County and it is located centrally in New Jersey, so that we have the best of more than two worlds when we travel to New York, Pennsylvania and Jersey Shore. We are fortunate to have great schools and many small businesses. My staff and myself are dedicated to a highly successful practice in fighting and preventing substance abuse and addictions thus helping community to stay healthier and drug free. This is very important for not only our patients and their families but the whole population. We are very proud of our achievements in this area of medicine.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
The majority of my patients are people over 45 years old. Many of them are concerned with aging, and not only aesthetic part of it but also internal changes, such as menopause, andropause and weight gain. I believe in treating a patient as a whole, not just one organ or separate symptoms. For example, I treat many patients with diabetes which cannot be successful without addressing weight control. Another example is depression. There are many symptoms for depression, and very often they are related to hormonal changes. When I combine treatment of depression with hormonal treatments, the outcome is much more positive. Minimally invasive aesthetic procedures, such as Botox, Radiesse, laser resurfacing are proven to help self esteem in some cases, thus contribute to a better quality of life and less disease. I contribute my aesthetic practice success to a combination of my practical knowledge of general surgery with over a decade of general family practice. I guess I am lucky!
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
a volunteer doctor. Seriously, I cannot answer this question because this is where I see myself useful-medicine. I wish I was independently rich so that I could treat people without thinking about my staff salaries, electric bills, equipment keep up and other expenses. It would be just great to be able to offer medical help to anyone and everyone without thinking about medical coverage.
When (your age) did you first realize you wanted to enter the health & medical field? And did you experience anything in particular to motivate you to achieve this prestigious goal?
I was 15 years old when I realized that I wanted to become a surgeon. It honestly came naturally to me, and even as a premed and medical student in Irkutsk, Russia I just was doing what felt right to me. There were many patients there and not so many doctors, leave alone surgeons. It felt that if it was not me, then who would help all these people? I always felt a sense of urgency. I never thought that being a surgeon or a doctor is prestigious goal, or anything like that. I just got lucky, I guess to find myself at an early age. Then when I became a general physician here in the United States back in 1996, I was fascinated with medical technology in this country and that was exciting and motivation. My patients are mostly people over 45. I am reading every day about the anti aging protocols and procedures, and that motivates me to practice anti aging. I think that this century will be defined by people living really full and long lives, and that fascinates me.
