Describe the most rewarding experience that you have had working with a patient?
Every patient is rewarding within their own right. As a cosmetic surgeon, I love the change in attitude towards life that people have after a procedure. People are happier, feel like being more active & living life more to the fullest. One of the most memorable patients was a young lady who was born with abnormal eyes and eyelids her whole life. When I first met her, she could not even look me in the eye. She had a wonderful personality and genuine beauty but could not get past her childhood facial abnormality. The first day post-operatively after she had her surgery, I handed her the mirror and she broke down and cried. Her sister & mother cried as well. For the first time in her life she felt "normal" and beautiful despite always being that way. And this was only the 1st day post-op! All the psychological burdens she carried in her young life were suddenly lifted. As her surgeon, there is nothing more rewarding than her immediate, natural human reaction.
What is your charity organization of choice and why?
I volunteer with the Tzu-Chi foundation. Although it was founded by a Buddhist nun, it has no religious or ethnic affiliations which really attracted me. Tzu-Chi focuses it's energy and resources on the underprivileged and the medically needy all over the world; from Far East Asia to Africa to the United States. I was most inspired by the founder's story. Master Chen started the entire Tzu-Chi foundation by selling candles made with other nuns and saving one nickle at a time. Her story inspired so many others to help that now the Tzu-Chi foundation has an international presence as well as a medical school and several hospitals taking care of the underprivileged and passing on the message of compassion for your fellow human being regardless of race & religion.
What does living in the Torrance community mean to you?
Being able to come back to the community where I grew up means everything to me. My parents immigrated to the United States to raise my brother and me with the opportunity to achieve anything in life; our family's American Dream. Now after all my training and education, I have a chance to live that dream by raising my own child and family in the same community I grew up in. Being able to give back to the community I love and showing my child all the joys I had as in my youth is priceless.
What makes your specialties the right fields of medicine for you?
The aspect of medicine that always intrigued me was the psychologic impact of medicine. For me, a healthy mind is every bit as important as a health body. As an Oculo-plastic & cosmetic surgeon, I feel I have the ability to help improve a person's mental health with my surgical skills. I have always wanted to be an artist and there is no greater canvas than the human body. I've always believed each person is beautiful with untapped potential; like a marble slab or a blank sheet. It is up to the surgeon and the patient to create a natural look that enhances the individual's features. I truly believe this is the best way to approach my craft. The emotions and psychologic impact of a patient after a procedure are so rewarding that it makes me feel all the energy and years I have spent training worth it.
Finish this sentence: If I weren't a doctor I would be___.
An artist. Be it a musician, sculpture, painter etc... I have always felt my biggest asset was my creative energy and my ability to envision something and bring it to life as art. Much of life that we surround ourselves with is fleeting; however true great works of art have endured. I believe there is an inner sense of beauty that we all have that is inspired when we hear a beautiful melody or view a breathtaking landscape painting. With art, there are no limits; you are free and boundless to put forth whatever inspirations you have within yourself. So often are we confined by external environment. Art allows us for an instant to unchain our minds and create.
What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My favorite procedure to perform is SmartLipo. This new method of liposculpture is so much safer than traditional methods of fat removal. The results are superior as well. Having performed several hundred SmartLipo procedures I can say thse patients truly have the most positive psychologic impact. Unfortunately society puts in the minds of so many people unrealistic body images that many of us begin to hate our bodies which negatively affects our minds. There is so much negativity surrounding being "fat" or "overweight" that even people with small trouble areas feel like they are grossly overweight. Being able to help people overcome their mental negativity by sculpting out their body fat is extremely rewarding. I notice a great deal of my patients who after the SmartLipo procedure start leading a healthier lifestyle and healthier diet.
