Dr Shikani was voted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, he did his residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where he trained with Dr David Kennedy (the father of minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery in the US); Dr Shikani has performed the first 20 ballon sinuplasty procedures in the state of Maryland. He as also performed more than 10,000 nose and sinus surgeries over a 25-year career in otolaryngology. Dr Sohn did his residency at SUNY Downstate in New York, where he was voted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, and was named the Outstanding Resident. Our physicians excel the medical or surgical treatment of sinusitis, and perform state-of-the art balloon sinuplasty, which is an in-office procedure, under local anesthesia, that take about 30 minutes and clears 90% of chronic sinusitis symptoms. Alan H. Shikani, MD, FACS, clinician, researcher, teacher and inventor, is a most accomplished physician in the field of otolaryngology.
Dr Shikani did his residency and fellowship training at the Johns Hopkins department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (according to US News, Johns Hopkins is #1 Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery program in the United States for more than 20 years).
Dr Shikani is the founder and director of the Maryland Ear, Nose and Throat Center. He is the chief of the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of the Union Memorial in Baltimore, and chief of the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of the Hospital at the Good Samaritan Hospital, and assistant professor in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions,. He is also the founder and director of the Rhinology Fellowship at Union Memorial, and has trained many rhinologists who have come from different parts of the world to spend a year with him in Baltimore specializing in diseases of the nose and sinuses.
Dr Shikani is a diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology, fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of numerous other national societies, including the Alpha-Omega-Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of the Facial Plastic Reconstructive Society, the American Rhinologic Society, and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Triological Society, the most prestigious society in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery. To be elected to the Triologic membership, a physician must be sponsored by a member of the society and present a once-in-a-lifetime extensive peer-reviewed thesis. Dr Shikani’s thesis pioneered the new field of polymer chemotherapy for head and neck cancer*.
Dr Shikani has made many inventions which are currently on the market and have improved the lives of many ENT patients. Thousands of patients worldwide have benefited from the Shikani Middle Meatal Antrostomy Stent, the Shikani Speaking Valve and the Shikani Clarus Optical Stylet for management of the difficult airway.
Dr Shikani currently holds twenty four patents and patent applications in his name, either individually or as a co-inventor, and he has co-founded a bio-tech airway management company start-up company (The Airway Company), which manufactures speaking valves for tracheotomy patients. Dr Shikani has taught several courses on intellectual property and patenting at the annual meetings of Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and has published numerous publications in peer review journals and books, and made numerous presentations in national and international meetings.
Dr. Shikani earned in 2003 the coveted “Maurice H. Cottle Award for Clinical and Basic Research in Rhinology” from the American Rhinologic Society. The award is given only once per year, in recognition of the most outstanding national and international basic research in the field of rhinology. His research involved in vitro tissue culture of nasal chondrocytes for cartilage tissue engineering and potential use in orthopedics cartilage regeneration
