Liposuction Costs and Recovery Basics (Lipoplasty)

The Basics

Who wouldn't like a permanent way to remove their fat tissue? Liposuction (or "lipo" as it's familiarly known) targets those areas on your body where exercise just doesn't seem to cut it. The most popular sites? Thighs and tummy (no surprise here) but lipo can also be used on the buttocks, upper arms, and the chest area for men. Your chin, jaw line and neck can benefit from this procedure too.

  • How it's Done
Permanent and visible right away, two methods of liposuction are in use today; both are done under a local anesthetic. In tumescent lipo, your doctor makes a small incision in a body fold or hard to see area, then inserts a thin tube which breaks down and sucks up fatty tissue. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) uses sound waves and causes less blood loss and bruising; it's most effective in areas where the tissue is fibrous, like the male breast.

  • Recovery
    5 to 7 days.

  • Complications
A rippled effect can be produced if too much fat tissue is removed. Major complications are unusual though infections and blood loss can occur.

  • Costs
    $1,500 to $4,000.
